Homemade dog food and treats made with all-natural ingredients, because your furry loved ones deserve the best

I started Good Dog! Natural Homemade Dog Food because of my own 3 dogs: Charlie (4 years old, 27 lbs, Schnauzer/American Eskimo), Eckho (3 Years old, 85 lbs, Black Lab), Tundra (1 Year old, 45 lbs, Husky/ Border Collie). They were my inspiration!

Eckho had developed allergies, and after a few vet visits to the vet and medications I knew there had to be a better way to manage them. I thought back to when my son, Logan developed Blepharitis in his eyes when he was two, and I took him to 7 doctors to figure out what was wrong. None of them could figure it out, or provided useless medication. I had to jump into my own research and discover it could be managed with a healthy, high Omega diet. By incorporating things like mackaral and tuna, nuts and cashews, and mushroom powder from a naturopath, his eyes cleared up, and to this day he has very little issues with them.

I knew when it came to Eckho, I wasn’t going to make the same mistakes. Once the vet told me Eckho might be allergic to chicken I started looking at his dog food and treats and realized how much chicken was in the product I was feeding him (as well as a whole bunch of other things I couldn’t pronounce). I became more conscious about the things I was putting in his body, resulting in his itchy red skin, blisters in his ears, and constantly biting at his paws. I knew I had to do better for him. I took matters into my own hands and started him on high-quality Salmon food, incorporating toppers. I tried fish juices and oils, pumpkin, sweet potato and other ingredients with high nutritional value to try to enhance his body’s immune system. Over the course of 3 months, both Eckho (as well as Charlie) became interested in meal time again, and Eckho stopped scratching at his ears and they became less red and blistery. And, I noticed that Eckho stopped acting out, stopped eating sandals, stopped excessively jumping, and started listening more.

I continued to experiment with different ingredients for the next year. Fast forward to October 2024, We bought a house (in this crazy market). The house was built in 1965 and came with an old canning kitchen downstairs, where I now prepare Good Dog! Homemade Natural Dog Food. My kitchen is complete with a gas stove, a fridge, two stand up freezers, and even a built-in cellar! This allowed me to expand my experiments. I found a local butcher who raises Ontario Corn Fed beef, and started purchasing Beef and Liver in bulk, I would take it home and grind it all up to prepare batches of Good Dog! dog food.

I connected with local farmers in Dover, Ontario to purchase locally grown and sourced fresh ingredients like peas, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and carrots.

In order to process enough through harvest season and the excessive amount of vegetables I had on hand, I purchased a 64 litre pot from Williams Food Equipment. We powered through washing, cutting, and cooking hundreds of pounds of vegetables and packaging them in the freezer, ready to go in batches. I have spent the last year perfecting my recipe for Charlie, Eckho, and Tundra, and they love it!

I shared Eckho’s experience with other friends and acquaintances and they wanted to try Good Dog! Natural Homemade Dog food for their pet too. I invested in packaging and gave out samples, and boy has that taken off! It is amazing to see the change in so many dogs I have known for so many years.

My sister Maureen, has 2 dogs Brutus and Brantley (Eckho’s Mom and Dad). Brutus is a jumper, like Eckho. I always walk into her house with treats in my pocket, but I noticed that if they were store bought treats Brutus would still jump, get some zoomies jump again and then settle down (he’s just so exited to see his aunt). Over the last year, I have noticed that Brutus is more calm and less jumpy when he has Good Dog treats.

Over time, and since changing his food to Good Dog, Eckho’s instincts and behaviour has improved tremendously. Eckho’s instincts kicked in and he would lay under my autistic stepson to protect him. Eckho is not a therapy dog, but when it comes to protecting our kids, I have never seen anyone more invested in doing his job.

I recently started using Bone Broth to make my recipes. Most places use water, but through my research I have learned that taking the time to buy shanks, boil them down, and add the beef broth to the dog food improves their joint health, digestion, and strengthens their immunity. The ingredients I put in the dog food I make, helps keep their immune system strong and their coat shiny.  Bone broth doesn’t have added salt and the fresh butcher beef and local vegetables I use gives me peace of mind that my dogs are eating food that contains no chemicals, preservatives, or salt. The marrow in the broth provides them with additional calcium and magnesium to make them happy and healthy, Good Dogs! (not to mention it enhances the flavour to a whole other level).

Now you may be wondering “how does it stay good without spoiling”? All good dog wet dog food and treats are packaged in freezer safe containers that, just like human food, should only be taken out to be consumed within 3 days of defrosting, or if you prefer to just keep them in the freezer, you can also pop them in the microwave to defrost for a quick meal or topper to their kibble. Every ingredient in Good Dog products promotes healthy ingredients that are good for dogs they can’t get enough of, so make sure you ask about quantities to feed your dog based on their breed and weight. We can help your dog become a Good Dog! dog too, and you can be confident that what you’re putting in your dogs bowl is #farmtobowl.
